Barrino, 19, won the viewer-driven singing contest and a recording contract out of 70,000 would-be stars who auditioned in cities across the United States last summer in the third season of the "American Idol" reality TV phenomenon. The single mother of a 2-year-old girl had been a clear favorite with the three-judge panel but she only narrowly edged out rival Diana DeGarmo, 16, in votes telephoned in by viewers after Tuesday's finale performance.
